Computer acting up after the latest 'upgrade', sorry if I posted & sent out a blank!  These are 3 of the plein air pieces I've been working on this week - little paintings have not been happening and I apologise.  Will get back in the swing of things this week. 

WIP, Hull View 18x24 Acrylic

Orange Rose, 4x6 Oil

This rose is stuck way up towards the sky, about a foot above the rest of the bush.  I loved the contrast between the sunlit petals and the sky.  I think... practice makes (almost) perfect, I am more confident about roses now.  2 months ago they made me shudder....

Light Pink Rose, 6x8 Oil

Here we are with #3 in the Rose series.  I think I'm done for a while, but it was a good exercise in looking.  Light pink roses are also a symbol of sympathy, and I'm dedicating this one to my friend who is grieving right now.

I'm going to keep going with the roses for a while in my Daily Paintings.  I feel I can learn so much about color and design, not to mention transparencies of glass.  This rose is a little gorgeous deep orange flower that we bought this year.  To say it's in it's first year, it's been generous in it's flowering.  I'm feeling the rush of the end of the Summer and I want to grind it to a halt, dig my feet in and stand under the sun... begging for just a little more time!

A Red, Red Rose, 6x6 Oil

And that's all I could think of as I painted this gorgeous red rose this morning.  And Tim's favorite color rose is red, and we have two beaurtiful rose bushes because of that.  Left to my own devices I'd fill the garden with pinks, both vivid and pale, white, yellow, orange and lavendar roses.  But I have to admit... when the light hits these roses they're electric red.  It's funny, this one just flowed out of me... I didn't second guess myself or struggle.  I did think of Carol Marine's post today about when things 'glow'...  And I think I'm getting closer to achieving my goal of being able to paint roses this Summer.... and just in the nick of time, too! :)

Cherries, 5x7, acrylic

Loved these massive cherries on a plate on my turquoise table in the sun!  They are really black cherries, and very sweet, groups of 3 and 2.  Did a big plein air painting of cows today on my Studio Blog, with 2 other painters from the South Shore - beautiful day today!

The Arte y Pico Award

I was recently contacted by artist Elizabeth Floyd, telling me she'd selected my Blog for an award called "The Arte y Pico Award".  She's a wonderful artist who has a blog I love visiting,(check it out!) and by day she's a residential architect, so I doubly admire her dedication to painting.

To quote her description of this award:

The Arte y Pico Award has arisen from the daily visits that I make to many blogs which nourish and enrich me with creativity.  In them, I see dedication, creativity, care, comradeship, but mainly, ART, much art.  I want to share this prize with all those bloggers that entertain and enrich me day to day.  Doubtlessly, there are many and it will be hard to pick just a few."

5.  Neil Hollingsworth, because even though he doesn't have to blog anymore (IMO) he still does, and has a great work ethic, not to mention gorgeous paintings!

Red Plums, 6x6 Acrylic

Taking a break from my big painting of Isolated Showers, which you can see on my studio blog, I set up 3 little red plums that I bought just to paint.  I always have loved the purple plums much more.  Well, when I was done with this set up I punctured one of the red plums and I figured I should eat it and .... delicious!  Now I'm a red plum fan, too.  These were very difficult and I wiped it off a couple of times, but then just said "Oh, just PAINT it!", so I did.  :)

I was too busy running around dropping off and picking up paintings yesterday to paint, so I'm using a small one from last week.  My sister's favorite cake is white, with white frosting (really, she could forgo the cake but it gives the frosting something to stick to!), and for her birthday on August 1, I made her a cake.  So the cake, to remain 'so so so' white needs only egg whites, I had these three yolks left over.  I rolled them on to a white platter and painted them  Interesting thing, as they sat there, the leftover white that clung to them pooled around them, making an interesting reflective surface to paint. At first, however, when I painted these, it was nowhere to be seen.

Passing Storm, Acrylic 6x6

This is what they call 'isolated thunderstorms' and it was rapidly moving up the Bay. I felt like 'Quick Draw McGraw' (for those of you old enough to remember that cartoon) rapidly, rapidly getting down the shapes and colors. I had just come home from a fruitless trip to pick up my paintings at Pembroke. This is the story of my life. The pick up, aparently was a 4 o'clock sharp. Since it was my son's birthday and I was preparing a feast, I, in my mind, assumed they'd be there till 5 p.m. and since it's an hour's drive, I told my family I had to leave by 4 p.m. Well, when I set the cake in front of everyone I said "Anyone know what time it is?" When they said "5 o'clock" I grabbed my car keys ("Happy Birthday!!!!" ) and tore off up the highway at 80 mph. I arrived at 6:03 to find the tents being rolled up and my paintings locked in the bank across the street. So I used a 1/2 tank of gas for nothing!!!!! But this view was waiting for me when I got home, although all the guests were gone, and the birthday son was at the beach on a run....

Sunset Clould 5x7 Acrylic

Last night I sat on my porch and watched the sun slide down behind these gorgeous clouds, rimming them in gold and rose.  I really like the panel I used - I think it was some form of Gesso Board, but being me I didn't keep the wrapper so I have no idea what they are.  Fortunately they came in a pack of 3, so this morning I got another one in and have one left for the weekend.  I like the way I stayed loose in this - it's a struggle - and how the values are so close in range.

Just A Lemon, 6x6 Oil

Back in the studio.  It's a steam box today, although it's a sunny day so really I can't complain.  I love the simple shapes of lemons, and it looks so easy - but of course it's not.

Anyone in the Massachusetts area should try to stop by the Pembroke Art Festival this weekend, Aug 2 & 3.  You'll see 3 of my paintings there, some of Paula Villanova's too, and lots of other good paintings.  I'd like to congratulate Jody Regan who won 1st Prize in Oil/Acrylics there!

Slice Of Melon, 6x8 Acrylic

Yesterday afternoon I started this little Daily Painting, hoping to get ahead a day, so I could spend one whole day plein air painting followed by some studio work on bigger pieces.  But I just couldn't get this right.  I was using the local color, which had a dull dark red for the background, and a greenish white for the cloth under the fruit.  The shadow side looked reddish-greenish (now THERE's a color you won't find in a tube!) and the top of the fruit was vapid and white-ish under the light from the lamp.  So I threw in the towel and left it.  This morning it seemed I knew just what would work, and in about 20 minutes had gotten it to this stage - with no visual reference (we had eaten the cantaloupe for breakfast!).  Sometimes you just have to paint what it feels like.  This is one good example of that!

Thanks, everyone who emailed me about not giving up on food as a theme.  You're right.  Almost everything's 'been done'.  But not by me! :)

Scattered Blueberries, 6x6 Acrylic

So many things to paint for Daily Paintings.  I was a little 'stung' when a more accomplished local artist reviewed my work this Spring, and about the Daily Paintings she said "Food has been done and done.  It's old.  Thiebold had the last word on food.  You should do other things."  Well, I do other things, but the shapes of food, especially fruit, are a 'wonderland' to me.  People eat berries all the time, but when you really examine one, you find all sorts of patterns and reflective surfaces, as well as undercurrents of, for example, reds and greens in the blueberries.  So once again ignoring good advice, I set up a handful of blueberries this morning.  Here they are.

It's Plum Time, Oil, 6x6

I got these new painting panels from Karl Heerdt and couldn't wait to try them.   He's a Daily Painter, and has been making his own panels - decided to make it a little business.  They're nice!  They're pretty inexpensive (with shipping my pack of 10 cost $20) and they're canvas on masonite.  On the way to the studio I stopped to get some corn for tonight's dinner and saw three bins of plums.  Now, I LOVE plums, and I love the color of them, too.  So... at the studio I put them on a beautiful green background - and - voila!

I'm watermelon-obsessed!  I actually tried one day last week (Thursday?) to paint a stack of thick sliced watermelon, but couldn't do it justice... a wipe-off.  I love the many, many reds you use in painting this stuff, not to mention the yellows and pinks.  I'll miss it when the season's over.

White Rose, 8x10 Acrylic

Stayed home today just in CASE there was another water funnel in the area, like yesterday.  Turns out while I was gone the intense wind sucked one of the doors on the porch open and my cat Isabelle got out.  Hours later when I arrived home (even though I left the studio as soon as the worst had passed, there were trees snapped in half laying across the 2 main roads out of town, and telephone poles laying in the road) I saw what looked like a small piece of luggage on my front porch up against my door - it was Isabelle - traumatized!  So I played it safe and stayed home to paint with my acrylics, first a wipe-off of watermelons, then this beautifully opening rose.  Even though painting roses makes me go cross eyed, I'm determined to 'get' them this Summer.

I think the edge of the table is too sharp, so I'll probably soften it.

Rose Bouquet, Acrylic 5x7

We have an abundance of roses.  I'm thinking it's got to be easier to paint them one at a time! :)  But the gorgeous colors make it too hard to decide on any one.  In this bouquet I stuck little purple flowers that look like balls, or thistle into it.  Yesterday it was lavender sprigs.  

Anyway the zillions of petals are always what grind me to a halt when painting flowers.  Here I just stopped my eyes and let myself do one at a time.  One way to do it.  I also could have looked at the 'whole' of the bouquet and given the impression of the mix.  Another day, another bouquet...

Walkin' the Walk, 6x6 Acrylic

These days just seem to be made for walks on the beach.  Here's a woman and her Mom at Briggs Beach just getting a little exercise and talking about everything and nothing.  I'm not 'back' at my Daily Painting routine... having given myself time after opening my show.  Next week.  In the meantime... if you are in the Boston area, tonight there's a show I'm in at the Oceanside 17 Gallery in Hull, MA, called 'HEAT'... Should be a fantastic time, and you'll get to meet some really fine, fun people!

The Wild Cosmos Garden, 6x12, Acrylic

This was a request from my husband, who has the greenest thumb ever!  At the edge of his garden the Cosmos self-seeded and he couldn't bring himself to weed them out - so... we have a wild edge to the vegetable garden, with gorgeous pink flowers!  This one's not for sale, it's for his new office.

And I'd like to invite anyone who's in the area of the South Shore of Boston, to come see my show at the Ventress Library in Marshfield, MA (a great little town on the ocean with lots to see & do around, too), it's open now through mid-August.  The Opening Reception is Monday, July 14th from 7-8:30, and the show is sponsored and run by the North River Arts Society.

Also some new work is on my Studio Blog... please feel free to check it out and comment...  I must apologise for not posting recently, I have had yet another 'camera incident'... believe me, you don't want to hear about it!

Tiny Purple Roses, 6x6 Oil

Would you believe it if I told you these look much better in person?  And I couldn't get the glare off the photo, either... in the shade it looked too dark, in the light (or even the 'light' shade) it was bouncing off the canvas.  Oh well.  These are from a tiny rose bush that I had no expectations of - last year it yeilded just a few blooms.  This year - BANG!  Of course we caught a lot of the insects earlier this year.  I'm going to master 'roses' if it kills me.  This morning it's been humid and very warm, but a storm is rolling in, I can see it coming across Aquidneck Island, and I want to catch it on canvas, so instead of preparing my house for the 4th of July festivities, I'm painting (surprise, surprise!)!  If I don't get to post tomorrow (I'm going to try to paint chickens at a local farm) I want to wish everyone a Happy 4th of July!

Yellow Roses 6x6 Oil

These roses are from my garden - there are so many right now I can't keep up!  I have vases, cups, bowls - all filled with yellow, white, red, striped, orange, peach and pink roses - I'm in 7th heaven!  My show was supposed to Open last night but there was a problem with the Library's plumbing - so it's been postponed two weeks.  I'll dedicate a post to it later.  Right now, after the intensity of getting ready for the show I told myself I wouldn't paint for 2 weeks - an enforced 'vacation'.  To let my creativity lie fallow for a little while and see what comes of it.  It lasted 3 days, and for 2 of those days all I could think about was painting!

Salvia Cottage, 12x12 Oil

On a trip to Ptown during a painting trip this week, we pulled in across from Days Cottages (Ptown, I think, or it could be in Truro....)  And having just been to all the fabulous galleries in Ptown I was  so psyched to get out the paints.  All these little cozy cottages are lined up along the road, perched on the edge of the beach - nothing between them and the gorgeous bay but a strip of lovely sand.  The neat and tidy cottages each bear the name of a flower - I chose Salvia, partly because of the red jeep with the green kayak in front of it.  The light was just starting to slant and there was fantastic 'bounce' of this yellow light up into the shadow on the right side of the building.  Anyway...this nice family from Western MA was staying there, and they purchased the painting right off the easel.  I hope they enjoy it as much as I enjoyed painting it!

First Cosmos, 6x6 acrylic

This is our first, but not last, Cosmos.  I love the dark pink color, and look forward to it's cheering me throughout the heat of the summer.  I wanted the challenge of looking down on the little flower and little vase, measure, measure, measure.  We got these big sqare stones in a light sand color that act like stepping stones, providing a nice, warm neutral backdrop.

First Roses of Summer, 12x12 acrylic

This is going to be sold as a Daily Painting, despite it's size.  I couldn't find a 6x12 canvas, and I didn't want to make it a 6x6 today.  So.... These are two of the first of our roses, blooming despite our battle with worms, aphids and spiders this Spring.  Roses are so complex, I'm determined to conquer them this sumer.  But rather than work, work, and overwork this one, I'm packing some water, fruit and a book and hoofing it to the beach for an hour or so :) (must refresh the senses...)

I have been painting daily, but things have not quite worked out this week.  Maybe it was the heat... maybe it was Harry the Cat running out of the rich, dark garden dirt and coming to a stop on TOP of my wet beach painting...  Who knows.   I'll post one later today.

In the meantime I got this piece "SUMMER HOMES" (20x24) accepted into the Cape cod Art Association National Juried Show.  It's been a tough Spring in terms of rejections, so this was doubly sweet.  The show opens on EITHER the 19th or the 20th.  The formal acceptance letter they sent me said Friday the 20th, their website says Thursday the 19th - I'll have to call to find out!

Here's Your Answer, Acrylic 6x8

This is from one of my all time favorite images.  A few years ago we spent the 'off season' living on the beach in Hull, MA, and I was going through a pretty difficult time in my life.  I would walk the beach every day and ask God for help and strength.  One day I was feeling particularly low, and alone, and I asked for a sign (you know how you do that when you're feeling desperate?) that I was NOT alone and that He/She was going to stick with me.  and I looked up and I swear there was a perfect heart shape breaking through the clouds.  I said to myself "That's a pretty great 'sign'!"  and snapped the photo, because no one would believe me.  Periodically I re-paint it.  The original, large size painting went to a friend who has a very large burden to bear in this life.

Last Night, 11x14 acrylic

Amazing, gorgeous, clear warm evening last night, and while the sunset itself was jaw-dropping, the view up the river was soft and aqua/rose. So I grabbed my acrylics, and thinking of wonderful Marcia Burtt, laid in wet shapes with a big brush, then found it impossible to work with, but I kept at it applying more paint in washes, then in thick brushfulls for the land masses. My husband does not like the way I 'squared off' the land mass to the right, but I was abstracting it, not doing a portrait of Aquidneck Island. Well, I love the washiness of this, and though it's not a typical 'daily painting', I'm super busy this week trying to organize for my upcoming show and dealing with car issues ("Oh, Officer, is it reeeaaallly June already? I thought I still had a few days to get that inspection sticker! And you say I have a headlight out so I have to get that fixed first? NO problem!).

I can't believe how washed out the color is when it's posted! I'll try again in better light.

Eggs-actly! Oil, 6x6

Here I was working with two green eggs and one brown egg.  I kept wanting to make the brown egg much lighter, I don't know why.  Also I hate that the eggs are matte and don't have a great reflection from the light - s-u-b-t-l-e..... is what they are.  so I put them on a pink plate, and laid them on a purply surface....  trying to stay loose.  Missing my clams...

My Prizewinning Buddies

Nancy Colella, 1st Place Oils, North River Art Society Juried Show in Marshfield, MA - Yay, Nancy!

Paula Villanova - leaves her job to paint and immediately gets in two very tough shows - the North River Art Society and the South Shore Art Festival Juried Show - and won a prize in the NRAS!  (truly, I forget which prize - but it was for Hopper's House, below - I accidently posted this image of Paula's painting of San Miguel, and can't delete it!).   Congratulations, Paula!

And above is Phyllis Dobbyn Adams' piece that won a Composition Award at the North River Art Society Juried Show - as well as a prize in a New Hampshire show and one at the Portsmouth Art Guild.  Phyllis won an award as well for the painting below in the Juried Figure Show at Portsmouth Art Guild.  AND she won a 'first place' award for a piece (God help me I've lost track of which one) in the Cape Cod Art Association Open Juried Show.  Way to GO Phyllis - what a Spring you've had!

AND Denise Zompa won an  First Place award for (not this) a landscape at the Creativity Show at the Cape Cod Art Association Gallery Artists Juried Show.  I'm sure I'll be corrected as to the title of the Show, but that's OK, I'll correct it.  Go Denise!

Tiny Clamscape, Oil, 5x7

The series I'm doing is called "Clamscapes", and in it I'm exploring the colors and textures of Little Neck clams.  Why they are called this, when the 4 I've kept as 'pets' for this series have grown their necks to (and I am not kidding here) 4 inches long.  Now their shells are less than that.  WHERE did these necks come from?  Yesterday 2 of them had little, respectable 1/2 inch necks, but this morning all 4 had 2 inch or longer necks.  Tonight, they are grotesquely extended to 4 inches each.  They are going back into the Bay tomorrow.  EEEeeeeuuuwww.  But it is awfully interesting to extract and exaggerate the colors, as you can see better on my Studio Blog.

Radish Rainbow, 5x7 Oil

I found these multi colored radishes at the Fruit Center in Hingham, MA yesterday (one of the reasons I love the South Shore of Boston!).  Jim Kubiatowicz, a wonderful artist and the President of the Art League of Rhode Island, checks in on my blog periodically (he says every day, but... sure :) to see what's for dinner!  Well, tonight is going to be Radish Salad with these gorgeous little veggies.  They look like a bouquet of flowers in my favorite colors.  I really want to do a BIG one of these, too, like my big clams on my Studio Blog.

AND if you're in the neighborhood of Marshfield, MA this weekend and want to see some spectacular art, stop in at the North River Art Society Festival.  If you come on Sunday afternoon I'll be painting there, so stop and say 'hi'!

 

Green Eggs, No Ham, Acrylic, 5x7

Do not adjust the color on your set!  These eggs are (naturally) the palest green.  Gorgeous.  I will paint them again.  I also have a few new pieces on my Studio Blog and would love feedback.

AND I'm demo-ing at the North River Art Festival in Marshfield MA on Sunday all afternoon.  If you're in the area, it'd be great to see a friendly face!

Steamers-To-Be, Oil, 6x8

You know, I don't even LIKE clams.  To eat, that is.  I have no opinion of clams personally.  But at our Labor Day Clamboil last year I took a few out and positioned them on the counter and took their pictures, and in looking at the images this week I was intrigued by the subtle colors and the glistening of the neck things.   And then the shapes grew on me and I started drawing clams... after I did this I took out a bigger canvas, 14 x 18 - and sketched on it, but it was not big enough.  So I grabbed a 16 x 20, but once again... not big enough.  I think I finally settled on a 20 x 24 in canvas - let's see how that goes!

Beach Towel Twister, Oil, 6x8

Little green and red flip flops, a colorful beach towel - really, throw in a bologna sandwich and it's a perfect day!  I finally have my camera back, and am crossing my fingers that it's finally 'sand free'!  I haven't worked on that 'blue bucket & flip flops' painting - I may just paint over it.  So glad to be back blogging.  Thanks for being patient with me!

The Wanted Poster (For All NRAS Friends)

To all my friends who will be attending the North River Art Association's Opening Reception for the Art Festival this Friday night:  If you see the two smiling faces pictured here, please introduce yourself and say 'hi'!  This is Phyllis Adams and her husband Rich, who will be at a NRAS function for the very first time.  I encouraged Phyllis to submit something for the Juried Show, and not only did she get in, she got a prize for composition!  (errr.... Bristol Gallery Night

I'm so sorry I've gone 'dark' on you - the little episode with the sand in my camera has left me Post-less!  My son Conor is traveling in Italy this week and I lent him my big camera, so I have to wait till my little one is fixed (or declared dead) to post again.  SOON.  Anyway Friday night was Gallery Walk in Bristol and my friend Denise Zompa kindly opened her walls to me and Phyllis Adams to join in the fun.  Lots of people, a fun and interesting evening!

"Where's Your Other Flip Flop?" Oil 6x6

I'm trying to submit paintings to the many Juried Shows that crop up this time of year, and it's keeping me very busy.  But with beach season in mind, and an upcoming show (July, Marshfield... details to follow) with a theme of 'Beachscapes', I set up this little still life to paint yesterday.  In my mind I was reliving our trips to the sand and sea, with the problem upon arriving home, of the missing flip flop.  I really don't like the all-blue (and being literal, there was only ONE pail in the 3 stores I went to and it was the same color as the little flip flops), but hey, it is what is is.... don't you just hate that phrase?  Anyway, wish me luck with my submissions to the juried shows and the art association I'm trying for....

Orange You Good For Me, 6x6 Acrylic

This was the most luscious orange!  When I sliced it for breakfast I knew I had to paint it.  Things are hopping these days, getting ready for all the early Summer shows.  It doesn't help that it coincides with a Nor'easter-like urge to start new paintings - I should be simply wrapping up, framing, photographing and submitting this time of year.  Instead I'm stocking up on canvases, sketching out and making notes for new paintings, techniques I want to try... etc.  I'm hopeless.  

Keens on the Sand, 12x12 Acrylic

This is a Daily Painting even though it's larger because it's so simple and I did it in 1 1/2 hours last night.  I've been very busy painting and have posted a few new ones on my studio blog.  I think my friends have found me extremely anti social lately but I really have been working away on projects that keep me up at night thinking.  Now I'm getting ready for my show with Bonnie Hobbs at the Ventris Library in Marshfield (June 28 - more on this later) so I'll be doing a LOT of beach scenes, since 'Beachscapes' is our theme.

Featured Artist - Mary Sheehan Winn

I thought I'd feature friend and fellow painter Mary Sheehan Winn today.  She's the smiley one on the left - on the Right is Sally Dean - also a fellow blogger and wonderful artist who will be featured at a later date!  I'm sure all of you have seen Mary's signature on various comments throughout Blogland.  She is the one responsible for my beginning to blog, and I'm very grateful to her.  Her colorful, spirited paintings are a joy to see, and they look even better in person (I  think everyone's do).  She splits her time between Marshfield, MA in the warmer months and Naples, FL in the winter, with a bit of time in Mexico and Nova Scotia thrown into the mix.  Nobody I know has more enthusiasm for art or anything else, and she is fearless - going for her goals with determination and gusto!  Check out her blog, then her website.  I think you'll be glad you did.
