Wishing For Westminster, 8x6 Oil
Monday and Tuesday of this week are the nights that the Westminster Dog Show is on TV. I've DVR'd it and will watch both nights together. This little West Highland White Terrier is from the Ladies Dog Club Show at the Bayside Expo Center Show from December in Boston. Westies are (and were once grouped with) Cairn Terriers, coming from the same breeding stock in the same area. Some people really preferred the pure white Cairns, and bred them apart, so now they're different 'breeds', but really interchangeable in terms of disposition and structure (watch, I'll get Westie Moms telling me I'm wrong about this, and that the white ones are sweeter...:). I put off painting the white dog because I thought it would be boring, but it was anything but! In person, you can see all sorts of pretty, colorful 'shadows' in the white, that are beautiful grays made of up beautiful roses, and blues and ochres..

Such a darling dog. And a lovely painting too!
ReplyDeleteWhat a little sweetie
ReplyDeleteKelley, you've captured that nice Westie disposition in this little one. Love it! I used to work for Dog Fancy magazine and Westminster was THE event of the year (tho I never got to attend!!). Your wonderful dog show series is bringing back so many fun memories.
ReplyDeleteI love Westies! When I walk Otis we usually see two, Bogey and Mac! They are so cute and your painting is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteVery cute - well done, Kelley!
ReplyDeleteI spent last weekend with a Westie. He was adorable and a very confident kind of guy. I think you did a good job on his expression. I can feel his spirit and look into his kind eyes.
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect likeness of a little Westie. You did a great job capturing the white fur, with all the colors in the shadows!
ReplyDeleteI just love his expression! It was great seeing these paintings in person. They are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI love his expression! It was great seeing these paintings in person yesterday...I just love them up close!
ReplyDeleteWow - thanks everyone! I've been running around like a chicken and haven't had time to respond. Westies are very popular - but Westminster didn't give them a second glance. I couldn't believe the pug got second to a Brussels Griffon! Come ON! :)
ReplyDeleteLove this little guy. I watched the show with my dog - she's part cocker and was very happy with the results.
