Butterscotch on Mom's Candy Dish, 8x6, oil
On Saturday I poured these butterscotch candies into my Mom's candy dish. It was a sunny day, and the light from the window lit up the golden wrappers, it was awesome - and without saying anything I turned to my son Conor, who looked at me and said "Daily Painting!" I don't feel I 'got it' and may try again with different viewpoints and backgrounds. I'm particularly challenged by the shadow side of yellow. Remembering Carol Marine's adage : "If you can't figure out what color something is, it's probably a gray...", I attempted a gray-yellow, but I don't think it 'showcased' the highlights enough. And believe it or not, it looks a LOT better in real life! :)

You really got the feel of the crinkly wrap on the candy. Great subject matter.
ReplyDeleteKELLEY-THOSE SHADOWS CAN BE SO TRICKY. I THINK IT LOOKS GOOD FROM HERE, BUT I AM ALSO CURIOUS AS TO HOW TO TWEEK THE SHADOW SIDE. WONDER HOW CAROL MARINE WOULD HANDLE THAT SHADOW? WARMER, LIGHTER, COOLER?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Pam. And Diane - I have no idea! Keep on fiddling.... But seriously I looked at this painting a hundred times yesterday, last night and this morning, before and after I photographed it. On the blog, too. But just now I noted it's so LOPSIDED! Too much 'dish' and 'base' to the right! HA! Good think I am not being graded on this!

Kelley, Your consistent productivity inspires me. Day after day, you keep producing great paintings! Another wonderful one today, this time a really challenging subject!
ReplyDeleteThanks Nancy - but this one got the 'wipe off' this morning when I got to the studio! I tried it again - usually my limit is 3 times then I'm DONE with a subject! I tried it again, and will post it later today for tomorrow morning's post!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nancy! You are hugely productive.... I'm in awe!
ReplyDeleteWe are our worst critics..... I think this piece is wonderful! I absolutely love butterscotch candies... I try not to keep them around...lol!
