I'm trying to figure out something to submit for my upcoming Challenge post on the topic of 'glass'.  I have a few other ideas I'll work on, but this is what I came up with today.  Thin glass, starlight mints inside - AND a nice little shadow.  I love thin glass, unfortunately it's fragile (duh!).  Who knows?  Maybe I'll get someone to make me a Hendrick's martini with a twist for New Year's! I guess that's really what I'm thinking...

Swizzle, 6x8 Oil

This weekend I bought these red glasses that remind me of ones (lost in some move) I bought in Mexico. Added to that I was given a couple of turquoise glass swizzle sticks, a starfish and a seahorse. When I said I wanted to paint the glass, my husband said "Do you realize how many colors of red, plus orange and yellow are in this one glass?" "Yup." I said - that's what I love about it! Also the glass, being hand blown, was lopsided at the top, and inside. I really like the reflections I got on the shadow and on the table, they were fun to paint!

This is your basic Crate & Barrel pitcher.* I keep it in the studio for Sangria (wait... I don't make it for MYSELF - it's for when I have company there!) So I do enjoy painting glass so much, and didn't have anything else to paint (if you could see my studio you'd get a kick out of that), I just put a lime-y green cloth under it and watched the reflected light. I thought I'd go cross-eyed! Aside from my directional lamp, there was light coming in from 3 sides (and rather than control it I thought I'd just try to paint it!). Ooooh, I'm getting an idea - of all the cut-up fruit for sangria in this.... I'll try that one of these days! In Rhode Island it's gotten in to the high 30's, and THAT's cause for celebration!

*Short story behind "basic Crate & Barrel pitcher..." - I bought one, brought it home and broke it while washing it before it's first use. The next week I bought another one and dropped it after I used it once... so this is #3, and you would not believe how careful I am with this one!

Away from flowers for today, and on to food! This is one of my mother's cruets, which, though not expensive, mean a lot to me. So since the only salad dressings I like are home made, I'm planning on doing a series, red wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, cider vinegar, and olive oil. I'm discovering the joy of painting glass, too. Don't worry, I'll mix it up with flowers & fruits & veggies, too. I think I could paint for 3 lifetimes at least and not run out of things I want to paint!

I spent today in Southie (South Boston) with Paula Villanova and Ros Farbush. I'll post that plein air piece on my Studio Blog. It's great to paint with Paula, always, and Ros, having celebrated her 80th birthday this year, gives me such hope - that loving painting can go on for a long time and bring a sparkle to our 'golden years'.
