There's a little island off the South Coast of Massachusetts called Cuttyhunk Island.  It's not a tourist destination.  It's tiny, very walkable, and you would go there for peach and quiet, for beauty and the salt air.  I was lucky 2 years ago to go and stay at the Avalon Inn, and this was their kitchen, which, btw, is my DREAM kitchen. If I ever built a kitchen it would be based on this one.  When I look at the photos I took I am taken right back to that magical time, where I met some great people and was able to sink into my art for a few days with no disruption.  And begin and end every day with stimulating conversation and fabulous food.  Every year the founders of this Artist's Retreat make magic happen for the artists, and imbed memories that last for years.  This year's spots are all taken, I believe but if you keep your eyes out, they open for registration early Fall, for the NEXT Fall.  Yoga in the morning, do what you will all day... cocktails and bonding and sharing in the evening.  Here's the website: http://cuttyhunkartistretreat.weebly.com

In a little coastal town in Maine, a group of artists gather every June.  Photographers, pastellists, oil painters, acrylic and watercolor - all sorts of art gets made.  Wonderful food is prepared and devoured.  Wine selected by an artist's husband (who really knows his stuff) and beer and cocktails.... all enjoyed daily.  The breeze floats right up from the cove, flutters the old fashioned sheer panel curtains... the quiet is so profound it's hard to get to sleep the first night.  All the beds are old and comfy, and when sleep does come you are truly in dreamland... until.... the lobstermen launch their boats - then we are privy to some very colorful language!

This big farmhouse is a haven for us.  We talk late in to the night about our lives, our art, our struggles, our successes.  We follow the progress of each others' work, year to year, as well as how all our kids are doing, our spouses, our houses and gardens.

AND we paint!  Morning, noon and night!  

A couple of larger pieces did not make it in here, but this is the bulk of all of our paintings!

I have always wanted to paint interiors, as some of my favorite artists, one in particular is Connie Hayes, are masters at it, and make it look fun.  But my own home isn't.... visually intriguing.  But this past Spring we went to a wonderful Inn on Cape Cod... the sitting room was so warm and inviting.. with a comfy seat near a fire. This was my demo at the Art Stable Gallery on Sunday.

Cozy Under The Eaves - 2nd try, 6x6 Inch, Oil

Here's my 2nd run at that interior I posted yesterday.  When I showed it to my husband, his comment was "But it's like just blobs of colors next to each other. No lines."  OK, I'm STILL trying to figure out what that meant - but I dreamed of the painting last night :) and I thought - maybe it's more the colors are competing and the values need more definition!  So for the class today I did it again (with feeling, of course!).

Time To Get Painting, 11x14 Oil

This is the kitchen table at the farmhouse we stayed at in Maine.  The scene was to represent the end of coffee time and the breaking out of the paints and easels.  These were special mugs.  The one on the left is a Fiesta mug that I coveted, belonging to my first oil painting teacher and (now) friend, Valerie Vitali.  She brought it from home because it was important to have a cup you loved for tea/coffee.  I SO relate!  The other one was purchased ON THE WAY to Maine (my husband wasn't with me and thus couldn't restrain me as I approached the coffee shop and passed the Thrift Shop in South Boston!).  

Many of us were painting inside the house that day, Jody Regan and I were happily humming while we painted in the kitchen, and I must admit this painting was punctuated by frequent bursts of 70's songs sung by all of us in a most... er... enthusiastic manner (Think... David Cassidy - "I Think I Love You!).  At this point we were beyond feelings of shyness, and fairly rocked the house!
