Kane's Coconut, 8x8 oil
As an anniversary treat my husband took the day off and took me anywhere I wanted to go. First stop, Kane's Donuts in Saugus, where Paula and Nina Villanova went and enjoyed the World Famous Donuts introduced to Paula by Katie May McElwain (all bloggers, BTW). We had the pup with us (no pics of Paco there, because the 'gentleman' waiting on us practically growled as Paco cried for me at the door), and I should have gotten a shot of that. All of the donuts looked like blue ribbon examples of their breed. But I am fond of coconut, so I painted one today. If you are ever in Saugus - let me amend that by saying if you are every driving BY Saugus, be sure to stop in and get a sugar fix at this cute little place! Could I have picked a harder donut to paint? But I was channeling Colin Page (not Colin Powell....) and treating the white coconuts as 'sparkle'... all different 'colors' of white dancing on the top of the cake...

Yum...looks very delicious.
ReplyDeleteThis is great. I'm now craving a donut;0
ReplyDeleteYum
ReplyDeleteIt looks amazing on my phone
Almost photo real
This is really something. I think the way you handled the coconut on the donut is perfect, especially with the hints of light purples and blues in there.
ReplyDeleteActually Paula introduced them to me! And I am glad she did. They were not only fun to paint (twice) but yummy to polish off when I was done. I painted a toasted cocounut, and it was rough! Yours came out way better than mine!!!
ReplyDeleteSorry I missed you when you were in Rockport. You will just have to come back up. HUbby and I are still trying to come down there for a weekend. Possibly for your open studio if we dont have the kids! Good job!
The color palette in this is so yummy. Thanks a lot...I've been craving sugar all day. No getting out of it now!
ReplyDeleteWow. There's nothing I'd like better than a big ole bite of that slammin' coconut donut.
ReplyDeleteLove the bits of blue-y purple-y yellow-y dancing with the whites!
Umm, did Conor know you were going to a donut shoppe on your anniversary?
:)
I love this. Great job on the coconut! Poor Paco, not allowed in to smell the donuts...
ReplyDeleteNow THAT's a donut! Beautiful job.
ReplyDeleteOh YUMMMMM!!! This is gorgeous Kelley.
ReplyDeletepughugs to you and PacoPants from Fattyville...
Looks delicious, Kelley - great job!
ReplyDeleteKanes, Yes! I live nearby and agree that they are fabulous! I'm so glad Dunkin's hasn't driven them out. By the way, I'm not sure how I found your blog, but seeing your daily work has been an inspiration to me to start my own daily blog. I've let my creativity slack and found that I've missed it very much. Thank you for linking to so many wonderful other artists, I've enjoyed looking at their work also.

hi kelley!
ReplyDeletewhat a delicious painting! i love it!
Hi Kelley,
ReplyDeleteI've missed checking in on you lately! I love this little donut study. While I would love to paint pastries, there's the problem of having to eat them when you are done! OK, maybe just one a week would be alright. In Colin's workshop..the little boat you painted...I love how you kept the background trees/tree line loose!
