Hydrangeas, 6x6 Oil

SOLD
Sometimes I think - "Why do I do this to myself?" Hydrangeas, one of my all time favorite flowers, can be so HARD to paint. There are zillions of painted hydrangeas that are bad examples floating around. I did not want to get into painting each petal (as Camille Przwodek says "dibby-dabby-do-ing"), and I knew I'd never be able to do an M Collier masterpiece, but I wanted to just indicate the gorgeous, lush blooms. I just went back to the studio this a.m. to retrieve some things and saw this, that I did yesterday, and noticed that the peach cloth was much darker than I have painted it. I could go in and fix it, but I may, hopefully, just do another one. Sometimes the second pass is much better. The third, as the saying goes, is the 'charm'.

  1. We are defenitely our own worst critics. Kelley you have completely captured the essence of these blooms! I love it. The vase, the water, it's all so wonderful. The subtlety of varying colors in the blooms....ahhhh

  2. Kelley, I have been battling hydrangeas with paint for years now and don't know if I will ever master them, but they are one of those flowers that everyone loves and buyers just snatch off the shelves in galleries! Keep up the good work lady, and give Paco pughugs for me... I'm so glad your open studio was a success.

  3. Agreed! Know they are hard to tackle and you did a marvelous job - kind of springy. Would be lovely in a guest bedroom to make them feel refreshed and right at home.

  7. Flowers are already a challenge but hydrangea's must be a madman's joke. I like how yours came out and love that you left some warm under painting peeking out.
