Tales From The Button Jar, 6x6 Inches, Oil

I hope you are all well and enjoying a little bit of Springtime where you are!  My Challenge Group last month was all about '3', and I kind of thought that three colors of buttons would make it for me.  But something pulled me towards the last painting I did of my cat.  Here's my 3 colors of buttons on a green cloth.  When I was a child my great great aunt (no grandmothers but an abundance of 'aunties') used to 'mind' me for short periods of time.  In my eyes she was ancient, and I was slightly terrified.  She was the oldest person I'd ever seen (must have been around 80...).  She would put her big jar of buttons on the floor and tell me that if I moved or talked she would take the buttons away - which was a threat enough for me - I LOVED those buttons - only thing in my life I've ever enjoyed sorting.  So... silent and immobile I sat on the linoleum sorting out all the fun colored ones, then all the interesting shaped ones, then the shiny ones, then silver and gold... it went on and on.  I don't have a button jar today, these fun colors came from a fabric store!

  1. Kelley, your buttons took me back into the past and family history. The older ladies were forever knitting grey or pink cardigans for themselves and their choice of buttons would be your deliciously shiny pearly pink ones in the foreground!

  2. Kelly, I love this painting for many reasons. First, I adore the colors--they are so yummy. I have a hugh button collection and especially love white pearl ones. I also have many button jars of all shapes, sizes, and colors. And lastly, my grandmother was a terrific seamstress and had many jars of buttons that I was allowed to play with. Your painting brings back so many memories. Bless you.

  3. Love this one, Kelley. My Grandmother kept an old cookie tin with pretty pictures on top full of buttons. I still have it, and go to it every time I need to find a button to sew on.

  5. A button jar! I do have one and it is thanks to my great-grandmother who started me in this. When there is an extra button you simply put it in the jar. When my girls were babies, there were so many sweet little mother-of-pearl buttons. I can see that layer now across my room.

Love your painting, the colors, and the reminder of a memory!

  6. This painting has such lushness. We must be on the same wavelength I was just talking about my Grandmothers button can the other day, spooky

  7. Fantastic painting, Kelley. I also played with buttons many times as a kid, and this brought back many memories. My husband makes fun of me for saving buttons when I no longer sew! Little does he know.... But what fun today's kids are missing out on! What will be their "button memories"?

  9. Thanks for sharing this wonderful memory. Kids nowadays all have electronic toys. I don't know if they could be happy playing and sorting buttons.
