Stand At Pardon Gray, 5x7 Inch Oil Painting by Kelley MacDonald

I have loved this stand of trees a couple of miles from my home for the 10 years I've lived here.  It's at the Pardon Gray Preserve.  Beautiful and different in every light... and I want to paint them all.  I started out with the image on my iPhone, then sketched in ink, and colored in with markers... to see what I liked in terms of size of the trees, placement, and atmosphere.

First small sketches,

Then I did a 5x7 in acrylic - to see if I liked that... and I DID,

But then I did the top one in oil... and it came closest to my vision in my head.  After painting this same scene all day, I was treated to this sunset view, below.... breathtaking....

In Winter's Hold, 6x12 Oil

New Years' Eve brought a storm to Rhode Island, and kind of put a damper on plans people might have had to go out. Me? I grabbed my camera and Tim drove me around Tiverton, Little Compton and Westport trying to get some good 'snow' shots. This painting came from a photo taken as we passed Pardon Gray, a land preserve here in Tiverton. Snowy, blustery weather is wonderful, and I think although this painting LOOKS gray, in person you can see every color in the rainbow, which, mixed together, comes out gray! I love this lonely looking tree. I have more... and will paint them soon.
